Lagos Life Raises $500,000 After Its Viral Nigerian Launch

Nigerian browser game Lagos Life has secured $500,000 in angel funding after its founder reported millions of players within days of launch.

Nigeria’s emerging games industry has recorded one of its most striking commercial stories of the year. Vatar, the studio behind the browser-based game Lagos Life, has raised $500,000 in angel funding at a reported valuation of $10 million.

The investment arrived shortly after the game’s October 1 launch. Founder Shalom Ayoola said Lagos Life attracted approximately 4.7 million players in its first nine days. He also reported more than $170,000 in earned or contracted revenue.

These figures were shared by the founder and reported by TheCable. They are impressive claims, although independent audience and revenue data have not yet been published.

A Nigerian world built for the browser

Lagos Life lets players explore a digital interpretation of Lagos without downloading a conventional PC or console game. Its browser-based design lowers the barrier to entry for people using mobile devices, shared computers or hardware with limited storage.

The game’s cultural familiarity also gives it an advantage. Nigerian locations, humour and social experiences are easier for local players to recognise and share online than the settings found in many imported games.

Vatar has already added Port Harcourt content, suggesting that Lagos Life may expand into a broader digital recreation of Nigerian cities.

Why the funding matters

Investment at this stage could help Vatar improve its infrastructure, retain its early audience and turn viral attention into a lasting entertainment business. The challenge will be proving that its reported player activity can translate into reliable retention and revenue.

For Nigerian developers, the deal offers evidence that culturally specific games can attract investors when they combine local relevance with rapid distribution.
